🇸🇧Solomon Islands

The Solomon Islands is an archipelago in Melanesia, east of Papua New Guinea and northwest of Vanuatu.

Composed of six major islands and over 900 smaller islands and cays, the terrain is largely mountainous with volcanic origins. Dense rainforest covers much of the land, and the climate is tropical.

The culture is diverse, with a rich heritage of traditional arts, music, dance, and storytelling. Over 70 distinct languages are spoken, reflecting the varied ethnic groups and influences from historical trade and migration.

The islands were inhabited for thousands of years before European contact, which began with the Spanish in the 16th century. During World War II, they became a major battleground, particularly Guadalcanal. The Solomon Islands gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1978.
