Kōchi

Kochi is a prefecture on the Pacific coast of Shikoku, the smallest of Japan's four main islands. Its capital is also called Kochi. Known for its rugged coastline, clear rivers and strong regional character, it is one of the least densely populated and most nature-rich parts of Japan.

Kochi occupies the southern, Pacific-facing side of Shikoku, with forested mountains rising steeply behind a long coastline, and the famously clear Shimanto River. The climate is warm and very rainy, among the wettest in Japan.

Kochi is known for its independent spirit, the lively Yosakoi dance festival, fresh bonito cuisine known as katsuo no tataki, and a strong local identity. Sunday markets and river culture are central to daily life.

Historically the Tosa domain, Kochi produced influential figures in the movement that led to the Meiji Restoration of 1868, including the celebrated reformer Sakamoto Ryoma. It retains a proud, distinctive regional heritage.
