Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is a state in northeastern Germany along the Baltic Sea coast, known for its beaches, lake district and unspoiled nature. Its capital is Schwerin. Sparsely populated and rural, it is a popular destination for seaside holidays and nature tourism.

The state features a long Baltic coastline with sandy beaches and islands such as Rügen and Usedom, backed by the vast Mecklenburg Lake District, the largest network of lakes in Germany. The terrain is flat, with a mild maritime climate.

The region has a relaxed coastal and rural culture, with brick Gothic architecture in its old Hanseatic towns, traditional seaside resorts, and a strong connection to the sea and the land. Tourism is central to its identity.

Home to historic duchies and Hanseatic ports such as Rostock and Stralsund, the area lay in East Germany after the Second World War. It was re-established as a federal state on German reunification in 1990.
