Alagoas

Alagoas is a small state on the northeastern coast of Brazil, known for its stunning beaches, coral pools and warm tropical waters. Its capital is Maceio. One of the smallest Brazilian states, it draws visitors to some of the country's most beautiful and tranquil shores.

Alagoas has a low coastal plain of palm-fringed beaches, lagoons and natural pools, rising to gently rolling interior farmland. It includes large coastal lagoons that give the state its name. The climate is tropical.

Alagoas culture is rich in northeastern Brazilian traditions, including folk dances such as the guerreiro, handicrafts, and a coastal cuisine of seafood. Its beaches and laid-back atmosphere shape daily life.

A center of sugar plantations in colonial times, Alagoas was also near the famous Quilombo dos Palmares, a community of escaped enslaved people. It separated from Pernambuco to become its own province in 1817.
