Northern Territory

The Northern Territory is a vast, sparsely populated territory in north-central Australia, famed for its outback landscapes and rich Aboriginal heritage. Its capital is Darwin, a tropical city closer to Asia than to most of Australia. The territory contains some of the country's most iconic natural and cultural landmarks.

The Northern Territory spans the tropical, monsoonal Top End around Darwin and Kakadu to the arid Red Centre around Alice Springs, home to the great monolith Uluru. It is a land of wetlands, escarpments, deserts and gorges. The climate ranges from tropical to desert.

The Northern Territory has the highest proportion of Aboriginal residents of any Australian jurisdiction, and Indigenous art, languages and traditions are central to its identity. It has a frontier, multicultural character and a strong connection to the land.

Aboriginal peoples have lived here for tens of thousands of years, with some of the world's oldest rock art. Administered at various times by South Australia and the Commonwealth, the territory gained self-government in 1978, though it is not a full state.
