Heard Island and the McDonald Islands form a remote, volcanic archipelago in the southern Indian Ocean, belonging to Australia. Though uninhabited, they captivate scientists and adventurous travelers with their dramatic glaciers, active volcano, and rich marine life.

Heard Island dominates the group, featuring Mawson Peak – an active volcano that last erupted in 2012 – and extensive ice-covered plateaus that feed nearby glaciers. The McDonald Islands are small, wind‑blown coral atolls, with steep cliffs and pristine marine ecosystems that support abundant sea lion and penguin colonies. Together, the islands cover just over 150 square kilometers, but their rugged, high‑altitude landscape and subantarctic climate make them a unique natural laboratory.

Because the islands are uninhabited, there is no indigenous culture or permanent community. The only human presence comes from a rotating crew of scientists and support staff stationed at the Australian Research Station on Heard Island. The multicultural crew maintains basic facilities, conducts research, and briefly hosts scientific visits, creating a transient yet collaborative human footprint.

The islands were first charted by the American whaler William Mutton in 1855 and later used for whaling in the late 19th century. Since 1979, Heard Island and the McDonald Islands have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for their outstanding natural values and active volcanic activity.
