🇦🇶Antarctica

Antarctica is Earth's southernmost continent, a vast wilderness of ice surrounding the geographic South Pole. It has no permanent population and no government of its own; instead it is administered collectively under the Antarctic Treaty as a natural reserve devoted to peace and science. Almost the entire landmass lies beneath a colossal ice sheet, making it the coldest, driest and windiest continent on the planet.

Covering roughly 14 million square kilometres, Antarctica is the fifth-largest continent and the highest on average due to its immense ice cap. That ice sheet locks away close to 70 percent of the world's fresh water and reaches several kilometres in thickness. The continent is ringed by the Southern Ocean, fringed by floating ice shelves, and split by the Transantarctic Mountains into a larger East Antarctica and a smaller West Antarctica.

Antarctica has no indigenous inhabitants and no permanent residents. Its only people are scientists, support staff and seasonal expedition crews from dozens of nations who live at research stations such as McMurdo, Vostok and the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. Life there is defined by international cooperation, isolation, and a shared dedication to research.

The continent was first sighted in 1820 and remained largely unexplored until the heroic age of polar expeditions, when Roald Amundsen reached the South Pole in December 1911, just ahead of Robert Falcon Scott. In 1959 twelve nations signed the Antarctic Treaty, setting aside territorial claims and reserving the continent for peaceful scientific use, an agreement that still governs it today.
